Technical Writing Resume Tips

If you are a technical writer who needs a resume prepared, you may be wondering about the best way to write such a resume. After all, the resume of a freelance writer, which many technical writers are, is going to be different than the resume of someone who has worked as an actual employee. Therefore, it will help to look at some good examples of writers' resumes and try to model your own after them. Here are some more technical writing resume tips that can help you craft the best resume possible.
When it comes to technical writing, the most important thing is what you know. You need to focus your resume around your technical knowledge and list it first. Employers are going to be looking at the skills, knowledge and technical experience you have when considering you for a job. Therefore, this should be listed first, either after your job objective or in place of it. Then, list your education and work experience. If it does not relate to your career as a technical writer, leave it out. When you can, offer statistical and numerical data which relates to experience you've had or work you've done.
Don't be afraid to advertise yourself in a positive light. Many people are too humble when writing their resume and downplay their achievements. Use active language and describe your achievements in a way that is both honest and impressive. A very important aspect of a resume, whether it is for a writer or a different type of professional, is proper grammar, spelling and format. It is probably even more important for a writer to have a perfectly formatted resume with no spelling or grammatical errors than it is for other types of professionals.
Technical writing resume tips can help you create a winning resume which lands you the jobs you want. You may want to read a few books on the subject. One recommended title is Resumes for Scientific and Technical Careers by the Editors of VGM. For a more general look at the process of resume writing, try something like Resumes for Dummies by Joyce Lain Kennedy. The more you learn about how to write a great resume, the better your own resume will be. And as you may already know, a resume can make the difference between being employed and being unemployed!

Today's Tip On Resume Writing
Most people introduce themselves when meeting a stranger. A brief handshake and giving your name are just two of the ways to let someone know who you are. A professional resume is an introduction from you to a potential employer. You may not be able to shake his or her hand until the interview portion, but you can still let employers know who you are. Writing a resume is not hard, yet many people do not know how to write a resume. There are resources to help you though. |
