Resume Writing: Teenagers Tips
![]() |
A resume is a document that describes your education, work history and professional skills. It is often the first thing an employer sees when you apply for a job. It is what helps them decide whether or not you should be called for an interview. If you are a teen who is seeking a job that requires a resume, you may feel intimidated by the prospect of writing one. However, there are certain resume writing teenagers tips which can help you. Many teens don't have much job experience and feel they can't write a resume. The good news is that there are ways around this.
The first thing you need to do is write a good cover letter. Your cover letter should be formatted like a business letter. The first paragraph should summarize your interest in the job for which you are applying and briefly explain why you are a good candidate. In the body of the letter, you can expand on your skills and experience which qualify you for the position. Even if you don't have job experience, you can still describe your abilities and use real-life examples from home or school if you have them. The last paragraph should serve as a closing statement which summarizes the letter, announces the enclosed resume and thanks the reader for their consideration. A call to action, such as 'I look forward to hearing from you,' is also a good idea.
The resume can detail your educational experience. If you have taken certain classes or participated in extracurricular activities which relate to the job you are applying for, be sure to include them. If you have won any awards in school, put them on there as well. Volunteer work is also a great thing to include. If you have worked somewhere, even if it's a retail store or fast food restaurant, put it on there and focus on the skills you learned. For example, a fast food restaurant job may have taught you how to effectively deal with the public and work in a fast paced environment.
The point is, resume writing teenagers can still present themselves as professional job applicants even if they have a limited amount of actual job experience. If you are a teen working on your first resume, you may want to seek assistance from a parent, teacher or your school guidance counselor.
