A Guide to Resume Style -- Writing a Winning Resume
![]() |
Writing a resume is something many people will need to do at some point. If you are applying for a job, your resume is a very valuable document which can make the difference between getting an interview and not getting one. Resume style writing is an important thing to consider before you get started with your resume. There are a few different styles of resumes from which you can choose. First, let's talk about the three main categories of resumes -- chronological, functional and combined.
A chronological resume is one that lists your education and experience in chronological order. Some people go from past to present, while others prefer to go from present to past. Going from present to past may seem like you're doing things backwards but it actually makes the most sense because a potential employer is going to be interested in your most recent job experience. They are going to want to see what you've done recently, not what you did ten years ago. Therefore, going from present to past is a logical way to present a chronological resume. A functional resume is one that does not go in chronological order but instead groups entries by skills, achievements and abilities.
A combined resume is often your best bet. It lists your education and experience in chronological order but also contains sections where you can detail your job skills, personal skills, awards, achievements and other details that may not be chronologically listed but that you want to include. This is a great type of resume because it has the best features of both the chronological and functional resume into one convenient format. When combined with a cover letter and references, the combined resume is the most thorough way to apply for a position.
Another part of resume style writing is how your resume looks. There are resumes that look conservative and traditional, then there are resumes that are more modern and creative. How creative you can get with your resume style depends on the type of job you are applying for. A job that is conservative demands a conservative resume, while a more artistic job might be perfect for a more creative resume. Check out some books or look on the Web for examples of resumes so you can decide which style is best for your particular needs.
