Job Hopping and Resume Writing: How Should You Handle It?
![]() |
Job hopping is the term used to describe going from job to job in a short period of time. If you have a history of short term employment with a variety of different employers, you may be concerned about how to present the fact in the best light on your resume. You might even feel nervous and think that your employment history ruins your chances of getting the job you want. Don't worry -- there are ways to handle job hopping and resume writing. Here are some tips:
First, think about what field the jobs were in. If you held a variety of different jobs in the same career field, they can be lumped together under one heading. If you held a variety of different jobs in different career fields, decide which of them should be listed and which of them should be omitted. There's no law that says you have to include every job you've ever had on your resume. You should only include the jobs that demonstrate your education and experience in your chosen career field.
Your cover letter is an important part of your resume. In your cover letter, you can summarize your work experience and why you feel you are the right candidate for the job. In your cover letter, you can touch on your work history and paint it in a positive light. Be sure to include the fact that you are looking for a long-term job, if indeed you are. Whether or not going from job to job will hurt you depends on what field you're in, the circumstances surrounding each job and whether or not your potential employer places a lot of value in the amount of time you've spent at previous jobs. Some employers care, others don't.
Job hopping and resume writing can go together, especially if you know how to use the right wording. You might want to hire a professional resume writer if you don't feel confident about your ability to write a good resume. A professional resume writer can make even the most notorious job hopper look good while being honest and up front about work history and skills. Your resume and cover letter can make all the difference, so you definitely want to submit the best ones that you possibly can when applying for a job.
